Pura Luhur Batukaru Temple

One of Bali's nine kahyangan jagat temples — directional sanctuaries protecting the island from evil — Pura Luhur Batukaru sits at 1,000 meters on the slopes of Mount Batukaru surrounded by dense tropical forest. Unlike Tanah Lot or Uluwatu, which draw thousands of visitors daily, Batukaru sees a fraction of that traffic and retains a genuine spiritual atmosphere.

The temple complex comprises multiple shrines within a moat fed by natural mountain springs. Mist frequently rolls through the jungle and over the temple walls, creating an ethereal quality. Sacred fish live in the moat. A sarong is required (available at entrance) and modest dress is expected. The drive from Ubud takes around 90 minutes through mountain roads — combine with Jatiluwih for a full day trip.
